Policy For Acceptable Use of Computer Equipment and the Internet

To Parents and Guardians:

Your son or daughter will have access to a world-wide network called the internet. There are hundreds of resources on the Internet, such as libraries, government agencies, universities, educational programs of all sorts, discussion groups, and software.

With access to Internet comes the availability of material that may not be of educational value in the context of the school setting. There are sites accessible via the internet which may have taken available precautions to restrict access to controversial material. However, on a global network it is impossible to control all materials and access to it. We (RSD) firmly believe that the valuable information and interaction available on the world-wide network far outweighs the possibility that users may procure objectionable materials inconsistent with educational goals.

The RSD educational program relies on proper conduct and ethical use of the Internet resources. The smooth operation of the Internet relies on this proper conduct of all users who must adhere to strict guidelines. These guidelines are provided here so that you are aware of the responsibilities of the users. If a student of the Internet violates these guidelines, that person may be denied access to the computer lab and to Internet access for up to two weeks, considering the magnitude of the offense.

Specific Provisions of the Internet Acceptable Use Policy

  1. Sites accessed by users of the Internet will contain the kinds of materials generally accepted in normal classroom situations. All lewd, obscene, and pornographic materials are strictly forbidden.

  2. Users will always use proper language. No swearing, vulgarities, or other inappropriate language, lying will never be tolerated.

  3. Users will not violate any copyright laws. Use for commercial activities (for profit) is generally not acceptable.

  4. Users will not violate the privacy of others. This means that no user will log on the system with someone else’s user-name and password. Users will not try to open files of another person. Users will not send anonymous messages, or messages signed by people without their consent.

  5. Users will not vandalize hardware or software.

  6. Users will never list name, address, phone number, or any other personal information.
